This is a recent article from the New York Times about Togo and Balto — two Siberian huskies that helped get serum to Nome in 1925— and the controversy that ensues. I've written about Togo, who I have a soft spot for. This story is much more in depth and has a modern angle.

MASSENA, N.Y. — Like any athlete, Winnie has a race-day routine. Four
hours before the beginning of her sled-dog race in this upstate town,
Winnie, a Siberian husky, laps up meat broth. Two hours before, she
submits to pats from spectators. Forty minutes before, she settles into
the snow for a final rest.
Winnie, center, a Siberian husky who raced in Massena, N.Y., this month, is also a show dog competing at Madison Square Garden this week. But her co-owner Diane Baskin-Wright said not to be fooled. “She morphs into psycho dog when she hits the line,” Baskin-Wright said.
